Tasting Life @ Mamma Maria – North End, Boston

Momma Maria Entrance

Located on a quaint cobblestone street just steps from Paul Revere‘s house sits the exceptional Italian restaurant Mamma Maria. With so many Italian restaurants in the North End Mamma Maria is truly a standout with its excellent service, locally sourced food and amazing city views. It should be on everyone’s list to try.

The restaurant itself is a beautiful house with five separate rooms great for a date or special occasion. We sat in a cute porch with mural on the walls full of birds and flowers on pastels and tapped our toes along with the 20s and 30s big band music.

Belly Q Knows How to Throw a BBQ – West Loop

Wednesday night in Chicago, Tasting Table and Belly Q teamed up for a huge summer BBQ in the West Loop and it was what a BBQ should be. Great company, plenty of drinks, ridiculously delicious food and a really fun atmosphere.

We were greeted and given the low down on where to get our drinks, food and hang out. The crowd was lively, music was good and the smells from the kitchen were unbelievable. We grabbed a drink (Hendrick’s gin & tonic with cucumber and Prosecco) and proceeded to have appetizers of rice-paper rolls with cucumber, soba noodles and mint and crispy tofu with sweet-and-sour sauce. These had great flavor and were a perfect crisp and light start to the richer meat that was to come.

I didn’t get a chance to try the shrimp with curry sauce but it looked delicious and people were snatching it up quickly. Continue reading

Tiki Bar Time @ Three Dots and a Dash – River North

Three Dots and a Dash opened last Wednesday in a little alley in River North. Apart from the now closed Trader Vic’s this is the only other Tiki bar in Chicago I have heard of so I headed over last Friday evening to check it out. You follow the tiki lights to a little door (there is a doorman so you won’t miss it) and step inside to darkness until you hang a left and see the blue wall of skulls. It feels like you are stepping back in time to 1940s Polynesia as you descend downstairs…or what you think it would look like based on old cartoons and movies.

One of my favorite Tiki style bar is Tonga Room in San Francisco so I had some high expectations for Three Dots and a Dash. Although missing a huge pool in the middle, Three Dots was a great experience. Continue reading
