Mitte is a bustling neighborhood in Berlin full of bars, restaurants and close to attractions like Alexanderplatz, Brandenburger Tor and museums. Schönhauser Strasse is a wonderful street with boutiques and cafes with a cozy Italian corner restaurant called Mädchenitaliener.
We happened upon Mädchenitaliener before going to see the Eisbären Berlin play (Berlin’s professional hockey team). The space is cozy and intimate with big round twinkling lights, chalkboard menus and photos with a chrome filter lining the walls. The menu is small with a handful of starters like olives, figs and antipasto, a couple of salads and about six fresh pasta dishes.
The pasta is simple but with great flavor combinations and large portions. The service is friendly and most people in the restaurant spoke English and menus available in English.
Klein (small) Antipasto Misto. Perfect appetizer to share and enough for 2-3 people to have a healthy serving.
Tagliatelle Rustica: with fresh tomatoes, sun-dried tomatoes, arugula, olives, capers and Bresaola. The arugula was a nice crisp addition to the pasta. I did not want this dish to be over. I.ate.the.whole.thing.
Tagliatelle Lorenzo: Tagliatelle with a sauce of fresh tomatoes, garlic, onions, bay leaves and basil, topped with prosciutto and Parmesan. If prosciutto is your thing then this is your dish.
Mädchenitaliener is a great place to go for traditional Italian pasta with a lively but cozy atmosphere and walking distance to many shops and sites of Berlin. Reservations are recommended for the weekend. Guten Appetit!
